Transdev should grasp opportunity for meaningful negotiation - Dessie Ellis TD
Sinn Féin Transport spokesperson Dessie Ellis TD has called on Transdev, the company that operates the Luas, to enter into renewed negotiations with the representatives of drivers. He made his called as Luas workers called off a planned 48 hour strike this weekend in order to create space for talks.
Deputy Ellis said;
"Luas workers and their representatives have taken an important step to try and resolve the dispute over pay and conditions for drivers. They have shown that they are open to talking. No worker wants to go on strike but drivers do not feel Transdev has shown sufficient interest in their concerns not just about pay but also about maintaining safety on the Luas.
“Drivers have made significant sacrifices to fight for their demands, losing bonuses they have earned. They have been attacked in the media also. The previous proposal for a resolution would have cut pay for new drivers and this was rejected by existing workers in the interest of fairness.
“Transdev must grasp this opportunity to enter into renewed meaningful negotiations with workers to resolve the dispute. I would also call on the Minister for Transport to use his position to facilitate this dialogue and encourage a fair agreement."
