Sinn Féin welcome Dublin City Council's vote this evening to keep the Brú Aimsir homeless hostel open

9 May, 2016 - by Daithí Doolan

Speaking from Dublin City Hall, Sinn Féin Cllr Daithí Doolan, chair of the Dublin City Council housing committee, said:

“Sinn Féin welcomes tonight’s important vote, calling on the Minister for Communications not to go ahead with the closure of a homeless hostel which would leave our already stretched homelessness services stretched even closer to the breaking point. The Brú Aimsir is a 100 bed homeless hostel providing an essential service to Dublin’s homeless population. It is vital that it remains open until we are in a position to provide a more decentralised service across local authorities in the Dublin region.

“The government claim to be prioritise tackling homelessness. Now is the time to turn that promise into action. The land where the Brú is situated is owned by the Department of Communications. It would be a travesty if the government were to ignore tonight's vote and proceed with the hostel’s closure.

“Dublin City Council is calling on the Dublin City's Chief Executive, the Digital Hub, and the Minister for Communications to work together and ensure the Brú Aimsir stays open.”

Emergency motion:

“Dublin City Council views with deep concern the proposed closure of Brú Aimsir. The Brú provides a 100 bed emergency homeless shelter. It is an essential part of Dublin City Council's homeless strategy.

“Dublin City Council calls on the Chief Executive, Digital Hub & the Minister for Communications to work together to ensure the Brú remains open.”
