Peace Funding must be for all - not just unionists in Mid & East Antrim Council
Sinn Féin MLA for East Antrim Oliver McMullan has said a panel for distributing £2.6m of EU peace funding on Mid and East Antrim Borough Council should be representative of the entire community.
Speaking today Mr McMullan said:
“The fact that six unionist councillors and no nationalist representatives have been appointed to the distribute over £2.6m of European Peace funding is totally unacceptable.
“The fund itself is designed to advance and promote reconciliation. Indeed the funders, the SEUPB, state that partnerships tasked with distributing the funding must be 'balanced'.
“It is indicative of the attitude of many of the Unionist representatives on the council towards nationalist councillors and those who they represent in the council area.
“We have already seen no funding awarded for the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising despite monies being awarded for Somme celebrations over the decade of centenaries. Now we have the discriminatory move towards the distribution of a funding pot of millions of pounds.
“Sinn Féin will be contacting the SEUPB to make them aware of the composition of this panel and ensuring such a partisan approach is challenged.”
