People deserve a decent ambulance service – Kenny

18 May, 2016 - by Martin Kenny TD

Sinn Féin TD for Sligo-Leitrim Martin Kenny, reacting to the National Ambulance Service capacity review, said that the ambulance service is under-resourced in circumstances where it is answering more calls and more complex calls.

Deputy Kenny said:

“It is clear that the people working in the service and their trade unions have a positive and constructive role to play in improving the service.

“The national ambulance service is working under pressure and with less and less resources. The state has a responsibility to provide basic services and the ambulance service is one of them. This is the case whether you live in the centre of Dublin or in a rural area.

“The report has pointed out that the HIQA targets cannot be met and so, clearly, more resources have to be allocated to the service, especially in rural areas where communities are being forced to rely on already reduced hospital services.

“I am calling on the minister to give us a firm commitment to implement the recommendations of the report without delay, because it is clear from the reading of this report, that delay will cost lives.”
