Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD has extended his “deepest condolences and solidarity” to the family of former GAA President Joe McDonagh who has died.

Gerry Adams said:

“Joe McDonagh was an exemplary President of An Cumann Lúthchleas Gael and steered it through some difficult years. As a player – winning the all-Ireland Hurling Championship with Galway in 1980 - and as President of the Association he gave tirelessly and unselfishly to the ideals of the GAA.

“I want to extend to his wife Peig, his three children, his family circle and friends my sincerest condolences and solidarity.

“Go ndeanfaidh Dia trocaire air.”
