Government avoiding responsibility for Ceol na Mara fire safety – Cullinane
David Cullinane, Sinn Féin TD for Waterford, has criticised the blatant evasion of responsibility currently under way by Fine Gael/Independent government-with regard to Ceol na Mara Estate in Kill, Co. Waterford.
Deputy Cullinane said:
“I challenged the Minister on serious fire safety defects found in the Ceol na Mara housing estate in Waterford, and asked what supports will be provided to private residents and if he intends to introduce mandatory independent inspections and strengthen planning regulations and laws.
“The answer I received was a masterclass in evasion and prevarication from the Minister Damien English, who said that the Government does not have any real responsibility for remedying the situation.
“This is an incredible statement from a national legislator. Property developers work within a legal framework that is put in place by government. This Fine Gael/Independent coalition, propped up by Fianna Fáil, could easily amend planning regulations and law, and could also work to provide supports to the private residents who are suffering through no fault of their own – and are suffering as a direct result of laws and regulations brought in previously by Fine Gael and by Fianna Fáil.
“We have heard a lot of talk of a new politics and a new day, but it is clear that we will get nothing new from the old dogs of Irish politics.”
