Sinn Féin will oppose measures to restrict access to third level education – Nolan

28 May, 2016

Commenting on proposals contained in the brief to the Minister of Public Expenditure and Reform in respect of third level fees, Sinn Féin spokesperson on Education, Carol Nolan TD has called for the publication of the Cassel’s Report.

Deputy Nolan said:

“Students preparing for their leaving cert examinations in a few short weeks will be alarmed to read the reports in today's newspapers in respect to student fee increases.

“The previous government has presided over complete chaos in respect of third level funding, which has now reached crisis point.

“It is becoming increasingly apparent that this government ran on a campaign of tax cuts for the wealthy while hiding the real agenda of placing the burden on low and middle income families.

“It is not good enough for the public to hear of these proposals through a briefing document to the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform and the Minister for Education must take charge of the issue.

“I am calling on the Minister to publish the Cassel's report immediately to allow for a thorough debate on the issue and an examination of the proposals.

“The minister cannot kick this issue down the road any longer and the crisis in funding of third level must be addressed.

“Sinn Féin will robustly oppose any attempts to restrict access to third level education through fee increases while this government continues with its agenda of lowering taxes for the wealthiest in our society.”
