Government must commit to introducing Domestic Violence Bill – Adams

2 June, 2016 - by Gerry Adams

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD, speaking during the Order of Business in the Dáil this morning, pressed the Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald on the need for the Government to publish the Domestic Violence Bill and implement the Istanbul Convention in full as soon as possible.

Teachta Adams said:

“The State signed the Istanbul Convention on Domestic Violence last November and the Programme for Government commits the Government to implementation of the Convention in full.

“A key component of its implementation is the enactment of the reformed and consolidated Domestic Violence Bill - the general scheme of which was published almost a year ago in July of last year - but there was no mention of it in the list of thirteen Bills to be advanced brought by the Taoiseach before the Dáil on Tuesday.

“This is supposed to be a priority matter for the Government, and one which would be welcomed by Deputies of all parties. It is vital that the Bill is published and brought before the Dáil as soon as possible as another positive step ensuring the Istanbul Convention may be ratified”. ENDS
