Taoiseach remarks on Water Charges a Slap in the face to voters – Eoin Ó Broin TD

4 June, 2016

Taoiseach Enda Kenny’s remarks that people will have to pay for water are ‘a slap in the face’ to voters says Sinn Féin TD Eoin Ó Broin. His comments come after Kenny told the Irish Independent that people must pay water charges.

Deputy Ó Broin said:

‘Enda Kenny's claim that water charges will have to be paid is a slap in the face to voters. It ignores the clear democratic will of the people as expressed in February’s general election. It also undermined the Governments coalition agreement with Fianna Fáil as it clearly predetermines the outcome of the expert commission before it has even been established.

‘Enda Kenny is hiding behind an unnamed briefing as cover to continue with water charges. Yesterday Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan received confirmation that no officials within the Water Division of the Commission or any relevantspokesperson had made an official statement to the media.

A decision by the EU Commission will only be made when a second River Basin Management Plan is summited next year. This plan must provide for ending of charges. Any comments before then are highly speculative and politically loaded.

‘Both Enda Kenny and individuals within the European Commission are determined to continue water charges.

‘The Taoiseach’s time would be better spent on ensuring that the second River Basin Management Plan is submitted in a timely fashion and outlines how his Government intends to comply with the broad objectives of the EU Water Framework Directive without recourse to domestic water charges.’
