Rent certainty is needed in rural areas – Kenny

14 June, 2016 - by Martin Kenny TD

Sinn Féin TD for Sligo Leitrim, Martin Kenny TD said tonight that his party’s Bill on rent certainty was just as relevant in rural areas as it is in cities.

The Bill is an attempt to tackle the housing crisis which has forced thousands of families into emergency accommodation, into cramped conditions with family or friends, or even onto the streets.

Deputy Kenny said:

“We know that many people in cities are living in hotels and hostels, but in rural areas, we have couples forced to return to live with their parents, breaking up families and making the journey to school or work so long as to affect family life, simply because they cannot afford current levels of rent.

“Rising rents in cities has its knock on effect in the countryside. High rent and the anxiety to keep a roof over your head means people make sacrifices in other ways; in scrimping on food, in cutting back on using the central heating oil or just not having enough for things like school tours or other outings.

“It is the responsible thing to do to legislate for long term certainty for tenants. The emergency in housing cannot continue and it is vital that practical measures are introduced to resolve it.”
