Students applying through UCAS warned over implications of Brexit – Nolan

29 June, 2016

Sinn Féin Education spokesperson Deputy Carol Nolan has today called on the Minister for Education Richard Bruton to contact his counterparts in the north and Britain after Irish students applying through the UCAS system to third level colleges in Scotland have been advised that their free fees will only be guaranteed for two years in light of Brexit.

Deputy Nolan said:

“I have been contacted by a number of prospective students that are concerned about the impact that Brexit will have in terms of their ability to study in Britain or the north

“For students that are going through the stresses of applying for third level college places at home or abroad, the growing uncertainty is causing considerable anxiety.

“Currently, Irish students can avail of reduced fees in the north, England and wales as EU students while fees in Scotland are free.

“Similarly, EU students can avail of free fees here in this jurisdiction on the same basis as Irish students.

“It is my understanding that some Irish UCAS applicants have been contacted by email in light of the recent Brexit vote and has advised them that the current situation in respect of fees can only be guaranteed for two years.

“When most undergraduate degree courses are a minimum of three years duration, it is clear that the ongoing uncertainty will have an immediate impact for students making decisions on their future studies.

“It is very disappointing that the Government’s contingency plans for Brexit do not contain any key actions in terms of Education and this issue must receive immediate attention.

“I am calling on the Minister for Education to immediately contact his counterparts in the North and Britain on this issue.

“I am also calling on the Minister for Education to clarify if any guidelines have been issued to Irish students or those from the north or Britain applying through the CAO in relation to the possible implications of Brexit given the closing date for change of mind CAO applications is the 1st July.”
