Insecure hours affect ordinary workers under extraordinary pressure – Cullinane

5 July, 2016 - by David Cullinane TD

Sinn Féin TD and spokesperson on workers’ rights David Cullinane TD said this evening that the Banded Hours Contract Bill is an essential piece of legislation and it is regrettable that Fianna Fáil have decided to hinder its progress with an unnecessary amendment.

The Waterford TD said:

“This Bill will allow workers to apply for a contract that is reflective of their actual working week. It also provides for a weekly roster for employees.  It is incredible that we expect households to function on a week to week basis when people are not even told by their employer what hours they will be working from week to week.

“We need a legislative response. This Bill speaks to that.

“I would ask Fianna Fáil to withdraw its amendment to suspend the passing of the Bill for twelve months and allow the bill to proceed through the Dáil and into committee as normal.

“The people affected by insecure hours are ordinary workers under extraordinary pressure. They can’t wait twelve months for this House to get its act together.”
