International community must increase efforts to prevent Mediterranean deaths
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said the international community needs to increase efforts to prevent the deaths of refugees in the Mediterranean.
Ms Anderson said;
"No one will forget the heartbreaking images of the body of three year-old Alan Kurdi washed up on a beach in Turkey which brought the scale of refugee deaths in the Mediterranean into sharp relief.
"But the human tragedy is continuing and already this year more than 3,000 people have lost their lives attempting to cross the Mediterranean to flee conflict and persecution.
"That is a significant increase on the death toll from last year. Each and every one of these deaths is a human tragedy and is one too many.
"We need to see increased efforts from the international community to prevent Europe's sinking shame of more and more refugee deaths in the Mediterranean."
