Crowe welcomes establishment of Reporting Commission

13 September, 2016 - by Seán Crowe TD

Dublin South West TD Seán Crowe has welcomed the signing today of an International Agreement between the Irish and British governments to establish an Independent Reporting Commission which will work  towards ending paramilitary activity in the North.

Deputy Crowe said:

"I welcome the signing of the International Agreement to establish an Independent Reporting Commission as a further step in bringing to an end to all paramilitary activity.

“The continued activity of armed paramilitary groups offers nothing to a peaceful society and imposes more hardship, greater harm and imprisonment. This agreement reflects the need for greater all-Ireland co-operation to tackle paramilitary activity and organised crime.

“Today is another step in implementing the Fresh Start Agreement as negotiated by Sinn Féin and others. An agreement made, must be an agreement honoured and implemented fully.

“This applies particularly to the British government, which has failed to fully implement their obligations under previous agreements including dealing with the past in the cases of Pat Finucane, the Dublin Monaghan bombings and many other outstanding issues related to the conflict.

“The British government must implement all outstanding agreements including legacy issues, dealing with the past, Acht na Gaeilge and other matters around human rights and inclusivity.”
