Scrapping of Roaming Limits welcome but issue remains unresolved – Stanley

22 September, 2016 - by Brian Stanley TD

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Communications, Brian Stanley TD, has welcomed news that the European Commission will scrap the time limit on charge-free mobile phone roaming in Europe.

However, there are still issues to be resolved in the Commission’s plan.

Deputy Stanley said:

“I welcome the decision by the European Commission that the plan to place a time limit on charge-free mobile phone roaming in Europe is to be scrapped.

“Ireland knows better than most the difficulties these charges cause in living and doing business on the island, particularly in border communities.

“However, there are still issues to be resolved for people who live on one side of the border but work on the other, or indeed anyone who lives near the border and finds their carrier changing intermittently throughout the day and may have more roaming traffic than domestic traffic.

“These citizens must not be penalized under any of the Commissions safeguards for mobile phone companies.

“Therefore the Government and Commission must work together to ensure All of Ireland reaps the full benefits of the abolition of roaming charges from June 2017.”
