Kearney asks Minister to support union’s call for official inquiry
South Antrim MLA Declan Kearney welcomed the northern Economy Minister’s commitment to provide details on the safeguards to ensure worker’s rights and conditions are protected by private companies in receipt of public grants.
Mr Kearney said:
“I asked the Minister specifically to explain what safeguards are in place to protect workers employed by private sector companies such as Concentrix, when they attract multi-million pound grants from our own job creation agencies, to then secure public sector contracts.
“The Minister accepted that the job losses in Concentrix are a matter of concern in both his own and my constituency.
“He was unable to clarify what safeguards are meant to be in place but committed to report back to me on the issue.
“I pointed out that this is a matter of huge public interest.
“However, I am disappointed the minister did not positively respond when I asked if he would support the call from the Public and Commercial Services Union for an official inquiry into the established failings of the contract between Concentrix and HMRC.
“There must be maximum transparency and accountability in relation to how public funding is awarded to the private sector, especially when it is used to assist them in securing public sector contracts.”
