Restoration of pay increments to nurses is a welcome move – Senator Máire Devine
Sinn Féin Senator Máire Devine has welcomed the decision of Minister Simon Harris to relent and restore incremental credit for nurses who graduated between 2011 and 2015 and will have these increments restored in January 2017 adding over €1,000 to their salaries.
Senator Devine said;
“I regret it required hundreds of nurses to come onto the streets outside the Dáil to force the hand of government but nonetheless this is good news and better late than never that common sense prevailed.
“This was a pure act of pay discrimination against our young nursing graduates and was a calculated government decision.
“The pressure and lobbying from the PNA and other nursing unions upon resumption of the Dáil was most welcome and goes to prove when enough pressure is put on, the Government will roll back.
“Hopefully this will contribute to keeping our much respected young nurses working in our health system and will encourage those who have emigrated to come home."
