First time buyers scheme is fundamentally flawed and should be scrapped - Pearse Doherty TD

19 October, 2016 - by Pearse Doherty TD

Sinn Féin Finance spokesperson Pearse Doherty has said the government’s first-time buyers scheme is fundamentally flawed, will drive up house prices and should be scrapped.

Teachta Doherty said reported changes to the scheme cannot change the fact that it can only drive house prices up.

Speaking this evening he said;

“The scheme announced by the government in last week’s budget is fundamentally flawed as is Fianna Fáil’s version of this scheme.  Changes reported in the media this evening cannot change that.

“This scheme can only drive up house prices and it should be scrapped.

“Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil are engaged in the failed boom and bust politics of the past and today’s announcement is more about the battle to claim credit for this flawed scheme than it is about helping young first time buyers.”
