Agriculture comes under increased pressure from Brexit - Hazzard

26 October, 2016 - by Chris Hazzard

Sinn Féin MLA Chris Hazzard said Brexit would be devastating for the agriculture industry in Ireland.

Speaking after a North South Agriculture Sectoral Meeting in Armagh today, Mr Hazzard said:

“Brexit creates huge uncertainty and challenges for our agriculture industry.

“While I welcome the ongoing discussion between the two Agriculture Ministers in the wake of European Union Referendum result they cannot offer any assurances regarding border controls, quotas and what experts have described as exceptionally high tariffs, even if we are part of a single market and customs union.

“There is no doubt that Brexit would have a devastating impact on the agriculture industry and rural communities throughout Ireland.

“The people of the North voted to remain in the EU and their vote must be respected.”
