Ross urged not to axe Expressway Bus Service – Imelda Munster TD

11 January, 2017 - by Imelda Munster TD

Sinn Féin Spokesperson for Transport Imelda Munster TD has urged Minister Shane Ross not to axe the national Expressway inter city bus service following on from recommendations made in the Grant Thornton consultants’ report

Deputy Munster said:

“It is clear as day that market saturation has created this crisis. If the Department of Transport along with the NTA had not flooded the market by issuing licences to private operators to cherry pick and cream off the most profitable routes leaving the least profitable routes for the public network then this financial crisis would not have developed”.

“Axing our national inter city carrier should not be the go-to response given the department and the NTA created this problem. Cutting off links and services is not the way to go given the economic and social benefits that public transport provides”.

“Public transport is not always profit making, it is about providing a hugely important public service.

It appears now that is is part of government policy to cut off rural Ireland completely if they scrap Expressway”.

“According to the report 516 jobs will be lost if the government choose this route”.

Deputy Munster stated that there needs to be engagement with all the stakeholders including theDepartment of Transport, the NTA, Bus Éireann and the unions to seek to find a resolution and save our national Expressway Service and that this needs to happen as a matter of urgency.

Deputy Munster:

“There is no reason for the Minister or the government to refuse to allow such engagement with all of the stakeholders involved in order to preserve, protect and enhance our public transport network services, that is unless their long term plan is to privatise our public transport network.”
