Spin and disappointment from Government on Waterford Cath Lab

18 January, 2017 - by David Cullinane TD

In response to a parliamentary question asked by Sinn Féin TD for Waterford, David Cullinane, the Government has confirmed that it has no intention of providing a dedicated Mobile Cath Lab for University Hospital Waterford and the South East. This contradicts Minister Halligan’s assertions last week that the mobile Cath lab was a ‘done deal.’

Deputy Cullinane said:

“Last week I asked Minister Harris his plans for a mobile Cath lab for University Hospital Waterford. He confirmed late last night in an email received by my office that the unit is part of a national crisis response which will include, quote, ‘the deployment of a mobile Cath lab for specific periods in specific locations.’

“He makes no mention of Waterford and certainly no mention of a dedicated mobile unit for the South East.”

“We have been here before and it's hard to remain calm in the face of last week’s spin and this week’s reality, but remain calm we must.”

“This week, twelve TDs representing the South East have put in a topical issue for debate in the Dáil chamber on this very issue.”

“This was a move I initiated because I know that in order to take the politics out of this issue we have to have all sides on board.”

“I have also been very clear over the years that the capacity, funding and investment issues with University Hospital Waterford are issues not just for Waterford but for the south east region.”

“Waterford and the South East needs proper health, education, transport and infrastructural services in order to sustain, develop and grow as a region.”

“I will continue to fight for Waterford and this vision of the South East, and I look forward to the Minister’s response to our topical issue on the matter.”
