Decision time approaching for British government and DUP on rights-based agenda – Adams
Sinn Féin Leader Gerry Adams TD today said that decision time is approaching in the talks in the north aimed at getting political institutions up and running based on equality and respect.
Gerry Adams said:
"Decision time is approaching for the British government and the DUP.
"The issues in contention are mainly rights based issues like, a Bill of Rights, Irish language rights, marriage equality and legacy funding for inquests and the British government’s bogus national security veto.
"In the last election a majority of citizens clearly voted for a rights-based agenda. The majority of MLAs support this concept.
"The DUP and the British government do not.”
"And Sinn Féin leader in the north Michelle O’Neill called on the DUP to join with others to build a rights-based society. Michelle O’Neill said:
"Sinn Féin have asked the DUP to unite with the rest of us to build a rights-based future for everyone based on equality and regardless of our political positions or denominational background.
"The DUP thus far have refused to engage properly on these issues.
"There are working groups doing some good work during the current talks but the DUP are ignoring the message from the recent election where people voted in large numbers for credible political institutions built on equality and respect and which have integrity at their core.”
