Water deal is a classic example of Fine Gael connivance and Fianna Fáil ‘cute hoorism’ – McDonald

12 April, 2017 - by Mary Lou McDonald TD

Sinn Féin deputy leader Mary Lou McDonald TD has described the deal struck between Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil on the future of water services as a classic example of “Fine Gael connivance and Fianna Fáil cute hoorism”.

Speaking as she challenged the Taoiseach at Leaders’ Questions in the Dáil today, Deputy McDonald said;

“Yesterday, it was confirmed, for once and all, that your confidence and supply agreement is in reality an agreement for connivance and cute-hoorism.

“The connivance is provided by your party in your blatant undermining of the democratic and political process within the Oireachtas.

“The cute-hoorism, as always, is provided by Fianna Fáil who have flip-flopped once again. They have used their political strength, not be constructive as they constantly proclaim, but to face down the will of the people – to thwart the will of the people.

“In a most spectacular U-turn, Fianna Fáil show once again why they cannot be trusted.

“When it comes down to it – they will look after themselves first.”

She continued by stating that Taoiseach Enda Kenny is prepared to subvert the will of the people in order to cling to his failed water policy and she demanded that he explain who he believed to be the so-called chronic wasters of water.

“Taoiseach, in this report, you have your levy for ‘excess use’ –keeping the backdoor open for the return of charges and you preserved the metering programme – the platform, you hope, for future privatisation.

“So you can tell us who these so-called ‘chronic wasters of water’ are exactly?

“Can you tell us who you imagine will be paying these levies and how they will be paying?”
