Gerry Adams TD welcomes Minister Varadkar’s remarks on border
Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD has welcomed the remarks of Minister Leo Varadkar in which he said “there should be no economic border at all between the North and the South.”
Deputy Adams also called on all contenders for the Fine Gael leadership to outline their view on the issue.
Teachta Adams said;
“Speaking in Donegal at the weekend, Minister Varadkar said ‘the North should stay in the Customs Union and the Single Market and that any customs checks should be in the ports and airports, not on land borders.’
“He also recognised the vote of the people of the North to remain part of the European Union.
“The Minister’s comments represent a more progressive stance in comparison to the one taken and pursued by the Taoiseach in regards of the challenges posed by Brexit.
“Designated Special Status for the North within the European Union is the best solution in the immediate term.
“I now look to Minister Simon Coveney, and indeed any other prospective contenders for the leadership of Fine Gael, to outline their positions in relation to this matter.”
