Jonathan O’Brien TD welcome Terms of Reference for Commission on Future of Policing in Ireland

16 May, 2017 - by Jonathan O'Brien TD

Sinn Fein Justice spokesperson Jonathan O’Brien TD has welcomed the publication of the terms of reference for the Commission on the Future of Policing in Ireland.

Teachta O’Brien particularly welcomed the provision within the terms of reference for the commission to make immediate recommendations and the fact that the review has been given a timeframe to complete its work by September next year..

Speaking today he said;

“It is important that this commission gets up and running as soon as possible.  Public confidence in An Garda Síochana is at rock bottom as a result of the unending list of scandals that continue to engulf the administration of policing in this state.

“I welcome the terms of reference for the commission that were published today particularly the provision contained within them to allow for immediate recommendations to be made.

“I also welcome the fact that the commission has been given a deadline within which to complete its work as it is important that it is not allowed to continue on indefinitely.

“It is important that the government does all in its power to restore public confidence in policing.  That must include ending the reluctance to hold the commissioner to account.”
