An Grianán Magdalene High Court decision ‘justice for survivors’ – Ó Laoghaire
Sinn Féin TD and spokesperson for Children and Youth Affairs Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire has welcomed the High Court verdict declaring survivors of An Grianán industrial home are to be allowed to apply to the Magdalene Redress scheme, overturning the controversial decision made by the Department of Justice to exclude survivors of An Grianán.
Two women from the centre took the case against the Department of Justice, as they felt the decision to exclude them was unjustified.
The Cork South-Central TD said:
“I welcome this morning’s verdict. It is great news for survivors of the industrial school as justice for survivors has finally prevailed after a painstaking few months.
“I congratulate the women who took the case and their legal teams.
“The Department has surely wasted a large amount of taxpayers’ money and a lot of time, causing distress to survivors. It was a cold decision to even fight the case in the first place.
“I wish to commend the two women for their perseverance and the support that they have had behind them all the way. I also commend Justice for Magdalenes and the legal counsel involved.
“It is a significant day for survivors and one which will have significant implications for many residents.
“However, there are many other issues that have gone unresolved and my party will continue to fight for justice, such as establishing a memorial for survivors.
“The Departments dragging of heels on this issue has not gone unnoticed. I will continue to remind them of their responsibility and not allow for washing of hands.”
