Agreement that rogue crisis pregnancy agencies will be regulated by autumn – O’Reilly
Sinn Féin Health Spokesperson Louise O’Reilly TD has welcomed the commitment she gained from the Minister for Health after pressing an amendment to the Health and Social Care Professionals (Amendment) Bill to regulate rogue crisis pregnancy agencies.
Speaking today, Deputy O’Reilly said:
“The revelations over the past year about the operation of rogue crisis pregnancy agencies and the sheer audacity and malevolent nature of some of these rouge crisis agencies are extremely shocking.
“There is no doubt in many people’s minds that this false information was doing unquantifiable damage to the women who received it.
“Therefore, I felt that it behove us as legislators to ensure that women would be protected.
“At the Second Stage of this Bill I felt I did not receive clarity as to when these agencies would be regulated and I decided to submit an amendment which would go some way to starting the regulation of these rogue agencies.
“After pressing the amendment today, I finally got clarity from Minister Simon Harris that legislation to regulate these agencies would be brought before the Oireachtas in autumn of this year.
“On the back of that I withdrew the amendment to allow Minister Harris to bring forward comprehensive legislation to address this issue.
“On such issues, the devil will be in the detail. I eagerly await the legislation to be laid before the Oireachtas so I can scrutinise it and ensure that it will regulate these rogue agencies and protect vulnerable women.”
