Coveney needs to get real on Brexit – Cullinane
Sinn Féin spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and Trade with special responsibility for Brexit David Cullinane TD said that the threat of a hard border is real and that Minister Simon Coveney needs to ensure it does not happen.
Deputy Cullinane said:
“The report by the British think-tank ‘UK in a Changing Europe’ released yesterday showed, once again, the dangers of a hard border on the island of Ireland.
“This is not an academic exercise. If Britain leaves the EU without a deal in place, the effects for the north and the island in general would be catastrophic.
“Cross-border trade would be severely affected. The shared regulatory systems would break down.
“Worryingly, the EU institutions and declarations that underpin the Good Friday Agreement would no longer apply.
“I call on Minister Coveney to deal with these issues with the utmost importance and with the greatest of urgency.”
