Sinn Féin make special status case to Dutch diplomats

21 July, 2017 - by Chris Hazzard

A Sinn Féin delegation led by MP Chris Hazzard and MLA Caoimhe Archibald has met with senior diplomats from Holland and Luxembourg to press the need for special status enabling the North to remain in the European Union.

Commenting after the talks at Stormont, Chris Hazzard said:

"We met with the Heads of Mission from both the Dutch and Luxembourg embassies and it was very clear that they are seized of the need to address the particular circumstances that exist here in relation to Brexit.

"We outlined the case for Special Designated Status for the North within the EU, making clear that Brexit has the potential to fundamentally undermine the Good Friday Agreement.

"We also discussed the recent comments by the Dublin Government that technical solutions to the border issue were not an option and that they would not support any deal that meant a hard border in Ireland.

"There was clearly a growing understanding for our position and Sinn Féin are determined to continue working with the EU Parliament, the Dublin Government and all the other 27 member states to continue to press the case for designated special status for the North."
