Statutory bodies must work to end scourge of bonfires – Kelly

21 July, 2017 - by Gerry Kelly

Sinn Féin MLA Gerry Kelly said today that statutory bodies need to do more to bring an end to the scourge of bonfires and said there was an onus on public representatives to show political leadership.

Gerry Kelly was speaking after statutory agencies moved this morning to lift bonfire materials from a site in the New Lodge area with the support of Sinn Féin and local residents.

Gerry Kelly said:

“I welcome this morning’s action by statutory bodies to remove bonfire materials which were blocking a road in the New Lodge.

“There is no place in society for these bonfires.

“They are a threat to people’s safety and property and have become a magnet for anti-social behaviour, hate crime and sectarian displays.

“Statutory bodies have a responsibility to do more to prevent the disgraceful scenes witnessed at bonfires over recent days and public representatives have a responsibility to show political leadership on this issue.”
