HIQA Oberstown report ‘deeply worrying’ – Denise Mitchell TD
Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Children and Youth Affairs, Deputy Denise Mitchell, has described as ‘deeply worrying’ the findings of a HIQA report into Oberstown Children Detention Campus.
Deputy Mitchell said:
“The Report published this morning by the Health Information and Quality Authority makes for worrying reading and raises serious questions about the standard of care provided to children at the Oberstown youth detention facility.
“The report finds that Oberstown is only compliant in two of the ten areas it examined. One particularly disturbing aspect is the finding that some children spent long periods of time in single separation without clear reasoning and that in some cases authorisation for single-separation were not always taken in line with policy. This is completely inappropriate.
“The safety and welfare of residents and staff at Oberstown must be the top priority.
“The management at Oberstown must immediately take on board the recommendations of the Report and implement them as a matter of urgency.”
