Minister must publish interim report on Stepaside Garda Station reopening – Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD

28 September, 2017 - by Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD

Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Justice Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD has called on Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan to publish the interim report advising that Stepaside be reopened.

Teachta Ó Laoghaire said;

“Minister Flanagan must publish the interim report as a matter of urgency to provide clarification around the decision made to reopen Stepaside Garda Station.

“Acting Commissioner Ó Cualáin told the committee that although four Garda Stations were recommended by the same report that recommended the reopening of Stepaside, the only one which has been announced to date is Stepaside.

“The metric around the selection of Garda Stations that require reopening needs to be examined, and we need to see the specifics, that should outline what bearing politics had on this decision.

“Minister Flanagan stated on the Dáil record last week that the opening and closing of Garda Stations was an operational matter for Garda and not something he was party to.

“This is not consistent with the answer given to Deputy Farrell on Wednesday of last week?

“At the PAC Acting Garda Commissioner Donal Ó Cualáin confirmed that the decision to re-open Stepaside Garda Station was a political one.

“He stated that 'my office did what we were asked to do.' It is difficult to see in what way this was not a political decision

“So we need to know who made the decision - as it clearly was not An Garda Síochána

“We need further clarification on the issue immediately and Minister Flanagan should facilitate that in so far as is possible.”
