Minister needs to clarify mental health funding commitment – Buckley
Sinn Féin deputy Mental Health Spokesperson Pat Buckley TD has called on the Minister for Health Simon Harris to clarify how much money new money has been commitment for the Mental Health budget in 2018. His comments come in response to confusion expressed by a number of advocacy groups.
Deputy Buckley said:
“This unfortunately is par for the course with this government. Last year, they announced €35 million in additional funding for mental health, but a week later clarified that €20 million of this figure would be spent in 2018.
“Yesterday, the government announced in its 2018 Budget that, again, €35 million in additional funds would be allocated to mental health services. However, this draws serious questions about where the delayed €20 million in funds from 2017 has gone.
“The Minister now needs to explain how the announced figures do not represent a much small increase of around €12 million.
“Where did the €20 million promised in 2017 go and how much real new one has been announced in Budget 2018.
“This inconsistency needs to be explained immediately.”
