Departmental papers must be released to all, not just leader of Fianna Fáil – Ó Laoghaire
Sinn Féin TD and spokesperson for Justice Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire has said that the Departmental papers that are being released to Micheál Martin should be released to other opposition parties, saying “Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and the leader of Fianna Fáil are not interested in accountability now but rather sparing their own blushes in trying to avoid an election”.
The Cork South-Central TD said:
“The Department’s trawl has very conveniently revealed pertinent documents that are now being shared with Micheál Martin in an attempt to stave off an election. This is now, very clearly, about parking accountability of government and giving Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil the political cover to stage a climb down from last week.
“This same documentation has been previously held back, despite attempts to obtain them though PQs.
“These papers, if they can be shared with one member of the opposition, should be shared amongst the whole opposition; it makes a mockery of our democratic institutions to do otherwise.
“The reality is that documents in the public domain show that the Minister had prior knowledge of the strategy to smear Sergeant Maurice McCabe in a most reprehensible manner. They show she read the document, and that her key political staff read it. And it is clear that though she could have intervened she did not, and continued to back the Garda Commissioner responsible for this approach right until a few months ago. So, it is hard to see what these documents will add to our knowledge.
“The papers must be released or else Micheál Martin will be leading his party back down the hill once more and we’ll only have a secret meeting between he and the Taoiseach to show for it.”
