Munster secures Transport Committee meeting on CIÉ Pension concerns

31 January, 2018 - by Imelda Munster TD

Sinn Féin’s Spokesperson for Transport Imelda Munster TD has today written to SIPTU, TSSA, and the NBRU, having secured agreement at a meeting of the Oireachtas Transport Committee, to invite the unions, CIÉ Group representatives, and the Minister for Transport Shane Ross to discuss concerns around CIÉ’s Defined Benefit Pension Schemes.

Unions have been raising serious concerns around the underfunding of CIÉ pension schemes, despite the fact that members of the scheme were given absolute commitments in relation to the future funding of the pension schemes, and these commitments are on a statutory footing.

Since 2009, CIÉ has failed to adhere to the 1994 agreement. Unions are calling on the Minister for Transport to make funding available for independent legal advice, to initiate an independent review of the pension schemes and to answer outstanding questions asked on behalf of the pension scheme membership.

At today’s Transport Committee, Deputy Munster asked committee members to support her proposal to invite all relevant stakeholders to a special meeting of the Committee in February to discuss the matter.

The Louth TD said:

“I am pleased that the Committee members present supported my proposal to invite CIÉ Group representatives, union representatives, other relevant parties and the Minister to attend a meeting of the Transport Committee, to be scheduled in the month of February to discuss serious concerns around CIÉ pension schemes.

“I am hopeful, given that this is such a serious issue, that all relevant stakeholders will engage constructively at the meeting next month with the objective of finding an immediate resolution to this problem which is a cause of huge concern and stress to workers who are worried about their pensions.”
