Fine Gael Ignore Science on Bees - Lynn Boylan MEP
Sinn Féin MEP for Dublin Lynn Boylan has criticised Fine Gael MEPs for failing to vote in favour of a ban on bee killing pesticides in a report on the future of apiculture.
Speaking from Brussels, the Dublin MEP said;
“Only last week the European Food Safety Authority confirmed that the use of neonicotinoid pesticides puts bee populations at risk.
"Another global study published this week in the academic journal Environmental Science and pollution Research assessed 200 scientific studies and concluded that the use of neonicotinoids over the past twenty years has inflicted ‘serious damage’ to birds, pollinators and other insects.
“Next month the EU Plant and Animal Food and Feed Standing Committee, made up of representatives from Member States, will meet to discuss extending the ban on the use of these harmful pesticides.
"As members of the governing party, today’s vote by Fine Gael MEPs does not bode well for the position Ireland will take at that committee.
“We know that bees and pollinators are incredibly important for our ecosystems and food security. It is astounding that Fine Gael have put the interests of big pharma ahead of science and food security. I will be writing to Minister Creed to insist that he heed science and support the ban of these pesticides."
