Decrease in home help hours in Carlow Kilkenny ‘appalling’ – Funchion

20 March, 2018 - by Kathleen Funchion TD

Sinn Féin TD Kathleen Funchion has criticised the Government today for the reduction in home help hours available in Carlow Kilkenny. The number of available home help care hours available for families has decreased dramatically in the last 5 years.

Teachta Funchion said:

“It is absolutely disgraceful that at a time when home help is needed more than ever in Carlow Kilkenny that this Government saw fit to cut home help hours in our area by 14,645 in 2017.

“The demand for home hours in Carlow Kilkenny amongst our elderly and in particular those with disabilities have gone up significantly over the past number of years, however the HSE are reducing and not increasing home help hours.

“Every day, people are telling me that the HSE will not give them home help support or will not give them additional hours help for their loved ones.

“Families are crying out for help and all they are told is that there is not enough hours for their loved ones.

“The situation is unfair and demoralising especially when we see other areas such as Dublin has their home help hours increase.

“The Government set a target in 2017 for home help hours for all care groups in Carlow Kilkenny of 326,267 and have actually provided 274,633. That is a shortfall of 51,634 of their own target.

“This comes at a time when families in Carlow and Kilkenny cannot avail of overnight respite care for children with disabilities and have not been able to for almost three years now.

“The Government representatives in Carlow Kilkenny have to answer for this failure.

“Our older people and those with disabilities deserve to live with respect in their homes and home help hours play a massive part in that. We need to see home help hours increased in line with need in Carlow-Kilkenny.”
