McCann welcomes eviction reversal
Sinn Féin MLA Fra McCann has welcomed the Housing Executive decision not to evict a local tenant and called for more measures to be put in place to prevent any repeat in the future.
The West Belfast MLA said: “The eviction of any tenant especially on the grounds of rent arrears is wrong and other avenues must be pursued to ensure people do not lose their homes.
“I have recently dealt with three cases of people facing eviction because of rent arrears and have been able to negotiate with the Housing Executive a way forward that allows the tenants to stay in their homes.
“In the most recent case, after representations made by myself before Easter, we reached agreement that no decision would be made until after the holidays. Since that time, after a number of discussions with the Housing Executive and myself in conjunction with the tenant, an agreement was reached on the way forward with the threat of eviction being lifted.
“These cases are deeply emotional for the tenant so I welcome the Housing Executive’s agreement to remove the threat of eviction in this instance.
“However, it is also clear that more measures are needed to prevent cases getting to such an extreme point and my party colleague and Housing spokesperson Carál Ní Chuilín is seeking a meeting with the Chief Executive of the Housing Executive to discuss how this can be done.”
