Inaccurate sexual assault numbers ‘deeply worrying’ – Ó Laoghaire
Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Justice and Equality Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD has said that An Garda Síochána having again been found to reporting inaccurate figures, specifically the over reporting of sexual assault, is “deeply worrying”.
Speaking this afternoon, Teachta Ó Laoghaire said;
“This morning’s revelations are deeply worrying, arising in a context of particular concerns regarding how sexual assaults are dealt with in our justice system.
“I echo the words of the Director of NWCI Orla O’Connor that our criminal justice system is failing to support women and failing to hold perpetrators to account.
“The reporting of sexual assault is very low. However, we have now learned that it is even lower than previously believed.
“It is important that the chief policing body in the state are recording their data accurately as it has a knock on effect on the wider system and how we deal with offences, in particular sexual assaults, as a society.
“I believe there are issues in the Gardaí about the culture and understanding of the importance of accurate data, that the current system being used by AGS is not fit for purpose, and that their IT system is in dire need of updating. Minister Charlie Flanagan must address this as a matter of priority.
“We also need to see the SAVI II report expedited so that we can have accurate and up to date data on the issue of sexual assaults.”
