Fearon calls for a halt to cuts to Human Rights Commission
Sinn Fein’s equality spokesperson Megan Fearon has called for a halt to cuts on the Human Rights Commission budget.
The Newry-Armagh MLA commented:
“The Human Rights Commission was established as part of the Good Friday Agreement and it was expected to play a key role in protecting and promoting people’s rights.
“However the Commission’s budget is down 37% in real terms since 2011 after year-on cuts imposed by the British government.
“It is time for an end to the attempts by the British government and the DUP to block the rights-based society envisaged in the Good Friday Agreement.
“This includes an end to cuts to the Human Rights Commission’s budget.”
