Use of private investigators by the State to spy on consultants “deeply disturbing and outrageous” – Louise O’Reilly TD

10 June, 2018 - by Louise O'Reilly TD

Speaking in the wake of revelations that the state hired private detectives to spy on consultants Sinn Féin’s health spokesperson Louise O’Reilly said;

“Susan Mitchell has exposed the tactics of the state that are deeply disturbing.  It is clear that the HSE advises against this course of action but were effectively overruled by the Departments of Health and Finance.

"The Minister for Health Simon Harris must now explain why this strategy was pursued and why his department or the HSE could not provide the information that was sought.

“It is outrageous that the time spent by consultants working in public hospitals is not recorded and accounted for.

“It is also disturbing that Minister Harris is authorising this aggressive approach to health staff while the state, on his watch, is failing to recruit and retain vital staff.

"Minister Harris has serious questions to answer about this issue and I will be calling for a topical issue debate on Tuesday when the Dáil resumes.”
