North Belfast MLAs to meet Public Health Agency on suicide prevention
Sinn Féin MLA Carál Ní Chuilín said today that she and her colleague Gerry Kelly have requested meetings with the Belfast Trust and the Public Health Agency to discuss the implementation of a strategy to tackle suicide.
Carál NÍ Chuilín said:
“Thirteen people have died by suicide in North Belfast since January this year.
“Gerry Kelly and I have requested meetings with the Belfast Trust & the Public Health Agency about the implementation of the Protect Life 2 Suicide Prevention Strategy.
“Many groups in the community, in sports groups, health & counselling organisations are doing great work in trying to help and support vulnerable people and their families, particularly those in mental health crisis and those people with addictions.
“The Public Health Agency has responsibility for the implantation of the Protect Life 2 Strategy and they need to increase their efforts to provide support to the community.
“We will be asking the Public Health Agency to outline its plans for the implementation of its suicide prevention strategy.”
