3 September, 2005

Spokesperson for Ógra Shinn Féin Damien Daly has called on 16 Moore Street to be made a National Monument and for immediate work to be undertaken to prevent any further damage to the building. Damien was speaking at Ógra Shinn Féín unveiled a 30ft banner at the GPO calling for 16 Moore Street to be saved.   Damien Daly said:   "16 Moore Street is a building of enormous historic significance as it was the last headquarters of the 1916 leaders and it is a disgrace that a building of such importance has been shamefully neglected for so long.  It is two years since Sinn Féín succeeded at Dublin City Council in preventing the demolition of the building. Since then despite overwhelming public support for the building to be turned into a museum nothing has happened and the physical state of the building has declined rapidly.   Immediate repairs to the building should be undertaken immediately to prevent any further decline.  The building should be listed and restored as an historic site."ENDS
