Discrimination against pregnant women should not be tolerated - Fearon
Sinn Féin MLA Megan Fearon has said that discrimination against pregnant women should not be tolerated.
The party’s equality spokesperson was speaking after a Belfast firm paid a £25,000 settlement to a woman who alleged discrimination relating to her pregnancy.
Megan Fearon said:
“All employers need to make sure that pregnant women and returning mothers have a supportive environment with flexible, family friendly policies and practices. That is what they are entitled to under the law.
“Any discrimination against pregnant women is unacceptable and their career opportunities should not be negatively affected by having a baby.
“Every year 27 percent of all complaints made to the Equality Commission are connected to sex discrimination.
“Twenty percent of these complaints are related to discrimination because of pregnancy and maternity.
“Sinn Féin is committed to reducing discrimination and inequality in the workplace."
