British government need to give serious consideration to rising support for Irish Unity - Hazzard
South Down MP Chris Hazzard has called on the British government to clarify what barometer they are using to test the appetite for Irish Unity.
Mr Hazzard said,
“In recent weeks we have seen a series of polls and surveys that suggest that the support for Irish unity is greater than it ever has been in the North of Ireland.
“The most recent report by Lord Ashcroft suggests that there is less than 5 percentage points between those who wish to remain as part of the United Kingdom and those who wish to live in a united Ireland.
“It also shows that a majority of people in the North feel that the North is heading in the wrong direction following Brexit.
“There is an onus on the British government to set out in clear terms the criteria for a poll on Irish unity.”
