O’Neill welcomes outcome of McCloskey review
Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Michelle O’Neill has welcomed the outcome of a review she established as Health Minister into the death of Co. Derry firefighter Joe McCloskey.
The review set out a number of failings, made recommendations and resulted in the Fire Service apologising for their actions in the aftermath of the 2003 tragedy.
Michelle O’Neill commented: “I want to again pay tribute to Joe’s widow Marie and his family. They have fought a long campaign for the full circumstances of his death to be made public.
“As Health Minister, I established the review in order to assist them in that and its outcome is a vindication of their determination and persistence. It should not have taken so long to get to this stage but I hope it can bring them some degree of comfort.
“The recommendations must also be implemented in full to ensure that lessons from this tragedy are learned and that we never again witness a repeat of the failings in this tragic case.”
