'Support for School Sports Programme needed' - Ennis
Sinn Féin MLA Sinéad Ennis has called for a cross-departmental approach to ensure school children can avail of the Curriculum Sports Programme.
The party’s culture, arts and sports spokesperson was speaking after a cross-party meeting today on the Curriculum Sports Programme.
Sinéad Ennis said:
“Today I and the other parties held a meeting with the GAA and IFA to discuss the long-term viability of the Curriculum Sports Programme, which is set to end on 31st October and which will put a significant number of jobs at risk.
“The reality is that the impact of Tory/DUP austerity is being felt by some of the most vulnerable in society.
“Any cut under this Tory/DUP budget would have a severely damaging impact on sporting projects within our local schools and to the tens of thousands of children who practically benefit from this funding.
“There should be a cross-departmental approach to ensuring that school children can avail of the Curriculum Sports Programme and I would urge the Department to apply for in year funds in the October and January monitoring rounds.
“Sinn Féin remain committed to ensuring that school children will not bear the brunt of Tory/DUP austerity.”
