Pay Equality must be delivered in full by 2020 – Jonathan O’Brien TD

Sinn Féin deputy spokesperson for Finance and Public Expenditure & Reform Jonathan O’Brien TD has voiced his concern that the new pay agreement offered by the Government will delay pay equality until the latter half of the next decade.

Speaking today, the Cork North-Central said:

“Sinn Féin has continually called on the government to end the legacy of cuts that continues to be exacted on public sector workers.

"Earning less for equal work would not be unacceptable for any workers in any business. The same holds true in the public sector.

“At present, more than 60,000 workers are earning less than their colleagues for the same amount of work. This includes over 16,000 teachers and nearly 10,000 nurses.

“The government’s latest proposals will not provide full pay equality for public sector workers until as late as 2026. Pay equality cannot be delayed.

“The public sector should be an exemplar of fair working conditions, and pay equality is an essential element of those conditions.

“Sinn Féin would do things differently.

“We would provide full pay equality by the beginning of 2020, not by 2026.

“This would see all post-2011 entrants seeing an initial pay increase at the beginning of 2019, with full equality reached by the beginning of 2020.”
