Government’s 'Getting Ireland Brexit Ready' events should come North - Ó Donnghaile
Commenting on the announcement that Government will hold a series of 'Getting Ireland Brexit Ready' events across the Twenty Six Counties, Sinn Féin Senator Niall Ó Donnghaile has today written to Tánaiste Simon Coveney calling on his department to bring the important event to the North.
Speaking in Leinster House today Senator Ó Donnghaile said;
“At a meeting with senior departmental officials last Friday I raised my frustration at the omission of a location in the Six Counties for one of these important events.
"The Irish government have a duty to engage with citizens right across the island at this crucial period. The lack of an event in the north is a glaringly obvious omission and failure to recognise the real concern that exists within the community.
“In recent times Ministers have been very firm in their public statements that citizens in the North will never again be left behind; the exclusion of an event of this nature in the North, on the same basis as the planned meetings, is a very visible example to people of where that statement is not being realised.
“I offer this suggestion in a spirit of positivity and hopeful of fostering greater engagement across Ireland at a time when that is crucially important.
“Should government decide to hold such an event in the North, they will then be in a much better position to say we are truly protecting the rights of all citizens."
