Fearon extends solidarity to Tanzanian LGBT+ community
Sinn Féin MLA Megan Fearon has called on the international community to stand in solidarity with the LGBT+ community in Tanzania.
The party’s equality spokesperson said:
“It is utterly deplorable that gay and transgender people in Tanzania have been forced to go into hiding and are fearing for their lives, after a senior government official called on the public to report suspected homosexuals so that they could be arrested from early next week.
“The LGBT+ community in Tanzania deserve the basic rights to privacy, health and freedom of expression that everyone is guaranteed under international law.
“I am calling on the international community to stand in solidarity with Tanzania’s LGBT+ community, discrimination or persecution of citizens anywhere is an affront to right-minded people everywhere.”
